‘Reckless driver’ arrested after high-speed chase on I-95 in Volusia County

Michael Pierce, 27, faces charges of DUI, cocaine possession

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A “reckless driver” was arrested after a high-speed chase along Interstate 95 on Tuesday, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

In a release, deputies said they were called about the driver after he was seen in a red Chevy pickup truck on I-95 near Oak Hill.

After troopers tried to pull him over, the driver — later identified as Michael Pierce, 27 — fled the scene “at high speed,” the release states.

Deputies forced Pierce to pull over using a set of stop sticks, and he was removed from the truck by Sheriff Mike Chitwood, investigators announced.

According to deputies, Pierce is a Pennsylvania resident, and he appeared to be “extremely impaired, unsteady and incoherent.”

Inside the truck, detectives found 17 Xanax pills, 5.2 grams of crack cocaine, and several bloody syringes with a rubber strap, the release shows.

As a result, Pierce faces charges in Volusia County of possessing crack cocaine, alprazolam and narcotics paraphernalia, along with DUI. He faces more charges stemming from the Florida Highway Patrol and New Smyrna Beach police, deputies explained.

In addition, a background check shows that Pierce has five open warrants and two pending DUI cases out of Pennsylvania, according to the sheriff’s office.
